Tolantongo is about 3.5 to 4 hours north of Mexico City, at the bottom of a canyon. You can go by bus, by car or on a tour; here is what each involves.

The park lies in the municipality of Cardonal, Hidalgo, beyond Pachuca and Ixmiquilpan. The highways are good; the last part is a steep, winding road down the canyon wall, which is what makes the trip long.

If you only have one day, a tour is the simplest option. If you have two, the bus plus a night in the park works well.

The quick answer

From Mexico City, Tolantongo is about 3.5 to 4 hours by road via Pachuca and Ixmiquilpan. By bus, ride from the northern bus terminal to Ixmiquilpan, then take the official microbus to the park (80 pesos each way). How do you get to Tolantongo by bus?

Take a bus from Mexico City's northern bus terminal (Terminal del Norte) to Ixmiquilpan, then the official microbus to the park.

Bus lines such as Flecha Roja and Ovnibus run to Ixmiquilpan. From there the microbus to Tolantongo costs 80 pesos per person each way. Check the time of the last microbus back before you go in, or plan to stay the night.

How do you drive to Tolantongo?

Head north to Pachuca, continue to Ixmiquilpan and on towards Cardonal, then follow the road down into the canyon.

The highway part is straightforward. The descent is steep, narrow and full of curves, so drive it in daylight and take your time. There is parking at the park.

What is the road like?

Good highway most of the way, then a steep, winding descent into the canyon that unsettles many stomachs.

Guests on tours mention bumpy roads and recommend motion-sickness tablets. If you are prone to it, sit at the front of the van and take something before the last hour.

Can you do Tolantongo as a day trip by public transport?

It is possible but tight: with two bus legs each way, you get less time in the park than on a tour.

If you go by bus, consider a night in the canyon so you have a full day in the water. See the best time to visit for staying over.

How do tours get you there?

In an air-conditioned van from central Mexico City, usually leaving between 5 and 6 AM, with a breakfast stop on the way.

Pickups cover neighbourhoods such as Roma, Condesa, Juárez, Polanco and the Centro, or a meeting point near the Angel of Independence. Drop-off in the Centro is often near the Palacio de Bellas Artes because of street closures.

How do you get between the two sections of the park?

By the park shuttle, about 15 to 20 pesos per trip, or on foot if you are fit.

La Gruta (river, cave, tunnel) is on the canyon floor and Paraíso Escondido (the cliff pools) is up the hill. Carry cash for the shuttle.

Can you get to Tolantongo from Querétaro or San Miguel de Allende?

Yes: tours run from both, and the San Miguel de Allende day runs 14 to 17 hours.

The full day from San Miguel includes breakfast, a kit and park entry, from $210.
