You will sit in hot pools, wade a rocky river, walk through a dark, dripping tunnel and climb a lot of stairs, then spend hours in a van. A few small things make a big difference.
The quick answer
Bring a swimsuit, a quick-dry towel, water shoes with grip, a waterproof phone pouch, a small headlamp, sunscreen, a dry change of clothes and plenty of pesos in small notes. Do not bring alcohol, glass bottles or pets: the park does not allow them.

What should you wear to Tolantongo?
Your swimsuit under comfortable clothes, and water shoes on your feet: you will be in and out of the water all day.
Skip anything that takes hours to dry. Bring a light layer for the early start and the ride home.
Want the kit handed to you? The flagship tour includes a towel, headlamp, phone pouch and sunscreen.

Yes: the river bed, the cave and the wet steps between pools are rocky and slippery.
Stalls on the approach road rent water shoes for about 70 pesos or sell them for about 180; one guest says they are cheaper outside the park. Several operators recommend water shoes rather than sandals.

How much cash should you bring?
Enough for entry if your tour does not include it (230 pesos), plus lunch, the shuttle, snacks, lockers and any zip line, with some to spare.
Everything inside is cash only and there is no ATM. See the entrance fee guide for every price.
Do you need a headlamp?
It helps: the tunnel is dark, with water pouring from the roof, and a small waterproof headlamp lets you see your footing.
Some tours lend headlamps. A phone torch is a poor substitute when you are standing under falling water.

How do you protect your phone?
Use a waterproof phone pouch on a lanyard, and keep cash in it too.
Guests repeat it in reviews: bring a good waterproof case. The spray from the cave waterfall and the tunnel soaks everything.

Explore the early small-group tourWhat is not allowed at Tolantongo?
Alcohol, glass bottles, pets and gas tanks are not allowed into the park.
Loud music is not allowed after 11 PM, and soap, shampoo and food are banned in the pools, river, cave and tunnel (you may eat in the camping zones). The alcohol rule applies to everyone.
Can you bring food into Tolantongo?
Food can be eaten in the camping zones, but most visitors simply buy lunch at the park's restaurants.
The restaurants and small stores sell simple Mexican food and drinks, in cash. The flagship tour sets up tables and a cooler for a riverside lunch you buy yourself.
Are there lockers, showers and towels?
There are lockers, showers and bathrooms; towels you bring yourself unless your tour lends them.
Rent a locker for valuables rather than carrying them to the river. Pack a dry change of clothes and a bag for wet things for the ride home.
